Environmental Compliance

Environment Compliance through a Legal Necessity: SIL considers this as its moral responsibility and has undertaken many steps to ensure that no harm is done to the environment:

  • Eucalyptus Plantation: SIL has developed 550 acres of Eucalyptus plantation for the disposal of its treated effluent. Eucalyptus Plant transpires the maximum amount of water through their leaves into the atmosphere. No treated effluent is discharged into any water body.

  • SIL has adequate capacity for an effluent treatment plant equipped with the latest equipment and technology to treat the effluent generated. All the boilers are equipped with four field ESPs to control the emissions. Various consents and authorizations are granted by SPCB under different Acts.

  • In a major step to check GHG emissions, SIL has established a PCC plant (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate) that uses the CO2 (carbon dioxide) that is generated in the boilers as a byproduct of fuel burning. This CO2 is used as raw material for PCC generation. 24400 m3/hr of CO2 is used that otherwise would have escaped into the atmosphere.

  • All the solid waste generated is disposed of environment-friendly manner as prescribed by SPCB without causing any nuisance in the adjoining areas.

  • The biogas produced during anaerobic treatment of the wet wash effluent in the Bio methanation plant is used as fuel in the power boilers, thus replacing some portion of biomass-based fuel.

SIL’s Competitive Strength

  • SIL has developed inbuilt flexibility and sufficient capacity to make pulp using all three types of Raw Materials
  • Agricultural Residues (Wheat Straw and Sarkanda)
  • Wood Chips/Veneer Waste
  • Waste Paper and Pulp substitutes
  • The plant facility is located in Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab. This belt is considered to be the wheat belt of Punjab which has abundant availability of wheat straw, wood chips, and veneer waste.
Hence, SIL has a price advantage in procuring raw materials, especially wheat straw as there is no paper mill in a radius of 100 km from the plant.
  • Total in-house pulp processing capacity is 480 TPD; out of which 200-300 TPD is Agro based, 200-300 TPD is wood
    pulp processing and
100-150 TPD is waste paper processing

Benefits:

  • Lower cost of feed sourcing.

  • Abundant availability of key Agro-Inputs like Wheat Straw and Sarkanda
